Classroom plants

Using as a stimulus plants already to hand in the classroom, plus others borrowed from the school office and headteacher’s study (with permission of course), the children drew onto black sugar paper with pastels, with no preliminary sketching or underdrawing. For this piece of learning, they could choose any colour they wanted, but only one colour plus white.

Whilst these were still very much closely observed drawings, the direct use of pastels added spontaneity and boldness. The restriction to colour-plus-white encouraged blending, to convey the lighter and darker shades seen in the plants.

(For anyone interested, notes on the teaching approaches that helped children towards these outcomes are on the COMMENTARY PAGES of this blog.)
